Be Careful Who You Open Your Doors To

Kate Horan, San Francisco socialite and philanthropist, was not expecting to open the door to her death on October 29, 2010. Gary Scott Holland pretended to be a PG&E worker and knocked on her door. When she opened, he claimed that he needed to check on a gas leak, explaining that there were deaths from gas leaks a few weeks before. She let him in only to be brutally murdered with a knife and crowbar shortly after. At this time Holland was on parole after only having served 11 of his 13-year sentence for attempted murder of his aunt. Apparently, he became upset after learning that his children did not want to have any contact with him and so he got high on methamphetamine, dressed as a worker, and sought and killed Kate Horan. Huffington Post quotes D.A. George Gascon saying, "A woman full of life who was admired by many and respected, lost her life as a result of what I will call an incredibly brutal attack by an animal that should never have been on our streets”. This is true. He should not have been put on parole for attempted murder. This death shook San Francisco, and new court decisions are reminding them of this horrible time. Gary Scott Holland recently pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and will most likely face 50 years to life in prison. He will be sentenced on December 12 and I will be sure to report back then.
In this article, the writer kind of jumped around from point to point. The author did not stick to a certain chronological order, which made it kind of confusing to read. It would have been a stronger article if he/she had written in chronological order because then I would have had a clearer view of what happened. Other than that, I think that this was a good article and it was beneficial that the author used quotes from the District Attorney to show that this issue is not going unnoticed.
